Why I Started WCS

Josh Brones

Founder & Principal Conservationist

"I have spent more than 20 years watching landowners get bad advice — or no advice at all — about wildlife on their property. Ranchers losing livestock with no clear path to stopping it. Farmers documenting crop damage with no idea how to make a claim. Agency staff overscoped and under-resourced attempting to launch or run programs where capabilities or outcomes didn't align with vision. Native predators being blamed for every real and perceived risk. Effective wildlife management is ultimately about coexistence — finding practical, durable ways for wildlife and people to share the same landscapes.

I immersed myself in wildlife conservation because of my deep passion for wildlife, and having lived a rural lifestyle all my life, I believed that there was a better way to address both wildlife monitoring and wildlife mitigation needs in a manner that put field science first, emphasized stewardship of native wildlife, resolved conflict, treated clients like partners, and produced results you could actually measure."

About Me

Josh Brones

Founder & Principal Conservationist

Global Conservation Leadership Post-Graduate Certification, Arizona State University | Executive MBA, California State University | Wildlife, Fisheries, Conservation Biology and Animal Science undergraduate education, University of California | 35+ years field experience in wildlife research and mitigation

Josh founded Wildlife Conservation Systems after more than two decades of participating in apex predator research, working for state and national conservation NGOs, and interacting with legislators, appointed officials, and various agencies. He built WCS on the belief that native wildlife deserves the greatest level of conservation effort possible, that science — when conducted with rigor and integrity — brings clarity and reveals the best path forward, and that private landowners, public entities, and government agencies deserve the same predictable and measurable outcomes. That coexistence isn't merely a buzzword, but a guiding principle, and that stewardship is an ethical obligation we must all acknowledge and embrace.

Protecting Land. Protecting Life. Protecting Livelihoods.
